FRIENDS OF WILLIAMSON'S TUNNELS
"A strange place it is. Vaulted passages cut out of the solid rock; arches thrown up by craftsmens hands, beautiful in proportion and elegant in form, but supporting nothing!
Tunnels formed here, deep pits there. Yawning gulfs, where the fetid, stagnant waters throw up their baneful odours."
The Friends of Williamson's Tunnels have campaigned for years to open up more of Williamson's labyrinth. Sterling work by the Friends has managed to find a new section of Tunnels in the Paddington area of Edge Hill.

LIVERPOOL'S CANNING AREA
While many of Liverpool's new citizens lived in overcrowded, sometimes squalid conditions, the nouveau riche could afford more luxurious surroundings.
In 1800, the Corporation Surveyor John Foster Senior had drawn up plans for an area known as Mosslake Fields. Situated on top of St James's Mount away from the grime of the city centre, the area offered an opportunity to live in spacious comfort.
Over the next 100 years a succession of developers built a large number of imposing and elegant town houses, mostly in the Georgian style.

ST JAMES CEMETERY
Towards the end of the 16th century, Liverpool was a growing town. It’s importance as a seaport had not yet been realized. Raw materials were being brought into the town from the surrounding area. Several quarries supplied the infant town with sandstone for building. Two within close proximity to each other near the present Brownlow Hill, one near to the present Park Road and the largest being that at the top of the present Upper Duke Street.
This Quarry supplied quality sandstone to the builders of the day, it also attracted the attentions of less honorable members of the community who saw the Quarry as a source of free stone.
